What is Claude-Web ?
Claude-Web is a user-agent associated with Anthropic’s Claude language models. It represents browsing activity initiated through Claude’s web access features. Unlike ClaudeBot, which is more closely tied to data crawling, Claude-Web corresponds to real-time user-initiated lookups, similar to what happens when users ask Claude to consult a web page to answer a question. It is a browser-like client, not a crawler.
Who is operating Claude-Web ?
Claude-Web is operated by Anthropic PBC, a U.S.-based AI company focused on building aligned, steerable language models. The Claude family of models is accessible via APIs and chat interfaces. When enabled, the model can access live web data, which triggers traffic using this user-agent.
Why you should be interested in Claude-Web ?
If you host valuable or time-sensitive content, Claude-Web means that your data could be displayed verbatim or paraphrased in a Claude-generated response. These accesses are prompt-driven and not persistent, but they still imply exposure to end users. There’s no long-term indexing, but no caching guarantees either. If that reuse poses a legal or strategic problem, filtering is advised.
How to block Claude-Web ?
1. User-Agent Filtering:
Block or monitor the user-agent string “Claude-Web” at the server level.
2. Reverse DNS and IP profiling:
Claude’s infrastructure may share IPs with other Anthropic services. Use traffic pattern analysis to isolate.
3. robots.txt not applicable:
Claude-Web behaves like a browser. It does not interpret robots.txt.
